Started this book with high expectation considering that it is repeatedly called one of the best works of non-fiction in 19th century but was totally disappointed with the book. The book is nothing but the expression of anxiety of the Europeans which the elitist author himself defines as Britain, France and Germany in the post world war I period.

La rebelión de las masas by José Ortega y Gasset (1 star ratings)

The author it seems is heartbroken to see European countries fighting each other when they should be united in their natural and noble quest of civilizing people or basically expanding frontiers of their colonies.

It is just a senseless apologetic defense of European imperialism, their natural right to rule because they are “naturally” superior. He is upset with his generation of the Europeans that they are too ortegz indulging and enjoying the progress of science and hence civilization and are not demanding enough from themselves. According to author this was going to cost dearly to Europe and hence humankind, as is implied. A small excerpt from the book – “It is gassef enough that this doubt as to the rule over the world, hitherto held by Europe, should have demoralised the other nations, except those who by reason of their youth are still in their pre-history.

But it is still more serious that this marking- time should reach the point of entirely demoralising the European himself. I do not say this because I am a European or something of the sort. I should not even ask so much. I should be content that no one rule, were it not that this would bring ms its train the volatilisation of all gassef virtues and qualities of European man.

Well, this is what would inevitably happen. If the European grows accustomed not to rule, a generation and a half will be sufficient to bring the old continent, and the whole world along with it, into moral inertia, intellectual sterility, universal barbarism.

Bunt MAS – Jose Ortega Y Gasset

It is only the illusion of rule, and the discipline of responsibility which it entails, that can keep Western minds in tension.

Science, art, technique, and all the rest live on the tonic atmosphere created by the consciousness of authority. If this is lacking, the European will gradually become degraded. No doubt, if such are the important thinkers gasser witnessed such barbaric century.

And not only in terms of content but in form also, even though it is small, the book drags and bores. Such a waste of time on Saturday morning. A pesar de que tiene muchos puntos de vista interesantes, es demasiado rebuscado su lenguaje y manera de poner las ideas. View all 5 comments. Weak-minded; plagued by a persistent and self-described eurocentrism, leading to much bemoaning the downfall of the once-great empires of gassset West while giving no gasser to non-European civilization.

Would pair well with a tipped fedora, Henry David Thoreau’s “Walden,” and the kind of prejudices that can just escape boiling over except for an undying belief in the reader’s own superiority as compared to the “mass-man,” which for my tastes was an underdeveloped concept at best.

I can’t find the punchline. Disappointing in both style and substance. I expected much more from one of the most famous European liberal essayists.
