Certainly there was a division-an official severence between the Catholic populace in towns, the Catholic peasantry in grewt country and the almost universally Arian soldier; and the enormous effect of this junction between the new heresy and the Army we shall see at work in all that follows.

The Great Heresies

It got the rest out of proportion and went violently wrong on Predestination; but it had its moment of triumph when it looked as though it were going to conquer all our civilization-which it would have done if the French had not fought it in their great religious war and conquered its adherents on that soil of Gaul which has always been the battle ground and testing place of European ideas.

Reaction there will always be; and there is about Catholic reaction a certain vitality, a certain way of appearing with unexpected force through new men and new organizations. The last chapter deals with the Modern Heresy, the overall secularization of Europe and the increasing adoption of an atheist worldview by western citizens. Belloc attributes the appeal of Arianism to the universal appeal of rationality as opposed to mystery. Things are now much worse than when the book was written, but all the trends signaled in the book are quite visible now.

Hilaire Belloc on The Great Heresies (Review)

They deplore the despicable weakness of mankind which compels the acceptation of some philosophy or some religion in order to carry on life at all. The world of good spirits and angels and of evil spirits in rebellion against God was a part of the teaching, with a chief evil spirit, such as Christendom had recognized.

New and more scientific methods were more easily applied by the rich landowners of the new Protestant culture than by the Catholic traditional peasantry; and, competition being unchecked, the former triumphed. I propose to select five main attacks of this kind from the whole of the very great-the almost unlimited-number of efforts, major and minor, to bring down the edifice of unity and authority.

These questions need to be answered for Bellochs arguments to work.

Hilaire Belloc on The Great Heresies (Review)

Destroy that in men by some heretical development, by “excepting” the doctrine that a man’s prime duty is towards the political society to which he belongs, and England, as we know it, would gradually cease and become something other.

Belloc, you were a man profoundly chaste and devoted to your wife. They were also less used to the arts and comforts of civilization than the citizens within the frontiers. This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers. Belloch just regurgitates laughably biased views, without any regard nor discipline for the line of reasoning he is presenting. The doctrine is dead; its effects on society survive.

Though free of many of the prejudices of his day, like anyone he was not free of them all, remember; nor are you. I wasn’t even aware of the Albigenians until I read this book.

Another eye opening history from a very readable writer.

We are living today under a regime of heresy with only this to distinguish it from the older periods of heresy, that the heretical spirit has become generalized and appears in various forms. Many through antagonism or lack of knowledge deny the identity of the Catholic Church today with the original Christian society. It kept up the battle against Christendom actively for a thousand years, and the story is by no means over; the power of Islam may at any moment re-arise.

He characterizes the Orthodox as schismatic, not heretical, and therefore not relevant to his book although his aside on this matter is not wholly convincing.

You will find it here.

They certainly were not of that religion by anything like a majority in the Latin speaking West. It will attempt to destroy us. Impassioned while being deeply rational. In all their various forms and under all their technical names Monophysites, Monothelites, Nestorians, the names of the principal three-and there were any number of others these movements throughout the Eastern or Greek half of the Empire were efforts at escaping from, or rationalizing, the full mystery of bello Incarnation; and their survival depended on the jealousy felt by the army for the civilian society round it, and on the lingering remains of pagan hostility to the Christian mysteries as a whole.

In the West it was notoriously so. It was due to a certain underlying historical character in the Near East which has always influenced its society and continues to influence it today. I’m putting this one aside for a little while, and might try again later.

Islam increased hresies only in numbers and in the conviction of its followers but in territory and in actual political and armed power until close on the eighteenth century. From the day of Pentecost some time between A.

But it was also the rallying point of these non-Christian forces which were of such great importance in the society of the day.
