As someone who knows diddly squat about barbarians, this was a really great book to start with. Overall, I rate it 5 stars and would encourage anyone interested in the period to purchase this book, particularly if you’ve read and enjoyed other recent histories of the period Wickham, Heather, etc.

Beautifully written book, of great scholarly value and depth. Hhe the following plus pages fail to make a convincing argument for this, neither in terms of an was the nature of the pull effect and why migratins was created by the breakdown of authority, nor indeed why authority began to break down.
